“To study the Buddha Way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be verified by all things…” – Eihei Dogen
Sarasota Zen Center presents a Book Reading/Study Group, facilitated by SZC teacher Will Rauschenberger, that will meet on four consecutive Saturdays, beginning March 8, 2014. We will read and discuss Realizing Genjokoan: The Key to Dogen’s Shobogenzo, written by Shohaku Okumura.
An excerpt from the Foreword: “This book is a treasure. Shohaku Okumura has given us a work of great value for any student of Eihei Dogen’s teaching, for Zen practitioners, or anyone interested in learning about Zen. The writings and teaching of the thirteenth-century Japanese Soto lineage founder Eihei Dogen has been highly influential not only in the introduction of Zen to the West, but for Western interest in all of Buddhism.”
I have personally found this book to clarify and deepen my Zen practice, as well as my understanding of Genjokoan and Dogen. In this study group, we will be exploring the commentaries of Shohaku to gain insight into this wonderful essay of Dogen’s. I recommend that you purchase a copy of the book from Amazon or other book retailer for your own use. – Will Rauschenberger
