Last week at our Ordinary Zen Group zazen we began a discussion of the Heart Sutra and how it informs our practice. This Sunday, June 7th, 2015 we will continue our discussion of the heart sutra with a reading from Shohaku Okumura’s book “Living by Vow”. Okumura is a Soto Zen Prest and translator who has written a number of excellent books. I will read a few passages from his book after our zazen practice.
In Zen it is always the practice (zazen) that illuminates our lives with insight and wisdom. Without zazen, discourse is nothing but an intellectual exercise. Words can only attempt to point to reality, they are not reality itself. It is my intention to continue to offer Dharma discourse and discussions on Sunday evenings after zazen. It is my hope that our discussions will help us to understand the meaning of verses and sutras in the context of our own practice.
I hope that you will be able to join us.
